Business creation and implementation of high-end technologies in real-world environments – together making a contribution in the service of everyone.
The phenomenon of the quantum leap: in several developing countries mobile phone use spread widely in areas where fixed-line phones had barely even been introduced.
A highly technologically complex object—the mobile phone—was able to dominate the market because its overall cost was, due to a high degree of public acceptance, considered affordable.
Can this paradigm be repeated? Can technology bring the tremendous benefits it has brought to developed countries and bring brighter days to people in developing countries and countries in conflict situations? How can we implement high-end technologies, and how can this inherently expensive process be accelerated? As of today, a large part of the financial burden is shouldered by philanthropy. Beyond philanthropy, sustainable business can be vital in enabling the large-scale penetration of high-end technologies, creating jobs and helping people. Upscaling, either in the developed world, or directly in developing countries, is the key.
